The Hungarian National Research, Development and Innovation Office launched the Science Patronage Programme again this year, providing funding to 366 researchers and research sites, including 62 applicants from HUN-REN centres. The aim of the funding is to integrate the Hungarian scientific and research community into international processes, as well as to support science communication and open science initiatives in Hungary.

A total of 452 valid applications were received by the deadline, with funding requests totalling HUF 5,238,661,000, necessitating an increase of almost HUF 2.5 billion to the original budget of HUF 1 billion.

The call for proposals has three pillars: first, it supports young researchers in participating in scientific conferences abroad; second, it supports the organisation of international conferences in Hungary. The third pillar focuses on the dissemination and presentation of new research results to a broader audience.

Among HUN-REN institutions, the Research Centre for Humanities (with over HUF 106 million), the Centre for Ecological Research (with over HUF 88 million), and the Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences (with HUF 46 million) received significant support. Other HUN-REN institutions that received funding include:

  • Research Centre for Natural Sciences
  • Biological Research Centre, Szeged
  • Institute of Experimental Medicine
  • Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics
  • Wigner Research Centre for Physics
  • Institute of Earth Physics and Space Science
